Colònia Güell | Team Starnes Takes Barcelona

23 Jun 2014

The Colònia Güell is another one of Antoni Gaudí's works and it is located in the town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló, just outside Barcelona. Just like Park Güell and La Sagrada Família, the Colònia Güell definitely has that signature Gaudí style that people recognize so well (organic shapes and textures like corals, rocks, seashells, fluid lines, etc...)

It was actually designed to be a H-U-G-E church, but it was never finished due to a lack of funding. I can't remember exactlyyyy what the tour-guide said (and I can't find the numbers on the Internet), but only about 20% of the building was actually completed. So what you find today, a small subterranean church, was actually just the lower level and crypt of a much larger structure.

Nevertheless, it is a gorgeous creation from one of the world's most famous architects. Even though it isn't as well known as other Gaudí creations in Barcelona, it is an incredible attraction (though a little bit off-the-beaten-path) and will continue to lure people to the small town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló to admire the work of the genius that was Antoni Gaudí.

this is how big the church was supposed to be
